March 2016 OCC in the House

What's been happening

Welcome back to another edition of our Newsletter.  We have a lot of stuff going on this month, but first we want to send a huge thank you to all the organizers of all the Bonspiels this month.  March is the busiest time for the club, with rentals, outside Bonspiels and club run bonspiels.  Did you know, that the 9 club run Bonspiels, we see a profit of just over $9,000.  And that’s directly attributed to the hard work and support of all of us.  Way to go.

Later on this page you will see a write-up by Anne Scott about the Flamingo Ladies Bonspiel, a very successful event.

The Smokey Joe Spiel celebrated their 10th year here at the club.  And the Shamrock Spiel were happy to be running their 25th spiel.  That is an amazing achievement, to be sponsored by Ron O'Neill of Shamrock Electric.  We at the Omemee Curling Club thank you.

The Monday night Mixed Doubles League has had a great time curling and learning the new game.  All indications are that it will be a fixture for next year.  Make sure when you are signing up for next years events, that you get your name in early as I feel this will fill up quickly.

Couple of things to remind you of:

The Annual General meeting will be held April 13, 2016 at 7pm.  Come out and hear how the club is doing, and what it means for the future.  Nominations for board representations and election of the Board also happen then.

The Annual Banquet will be held April 23, 2016.  Promises to be a fun time, great food, and dancing.

The Fund Raiser Dance to be held at the Club May 7, 2016, doors open 7:30pm.  Rye Street band from Peterborough, will be preforming.

Membership Deal

As of right now any NEW curler who signs up and pays for next season’s curling, Before March 31, 2016 can come out and play Friday’s for the rest of this season for FREE.  As an ADDED BONUS, the first 50 New curlers to sign up will get a $20 savings. WOW.

This is a limited time offer, so don’t delay.    If you know someone who is thinking about joining next year, make sure you tell them about this offer.  See Dianne Armstrong for more details.  Membership forms can be found by the bulletin board at the club, or ask current members.

Current members can also save money by purchasing next years membership before March 31, 2016 as well.  Due to ever increasing Hydro, Gas, taxes etc…. It probably will mean a slight increase in fees for next year.  So by purchasing now, you will save money and assist the club.

Board Notes

The latest board meeting took place March 21, 2016.  The treasurer’s report was presented, showing that we currently have money in the bank, and a full report will be ready for the AGM.  We received, with regret, a resignation letter from Sherry Drummond.  The Membership Committee reported, that they have set up registration days, in August this year, August 27, will be a BBQ and August 30 will be an afternoon session, hoping to attract retired members.  Also there will be the usual registration night the middle of September.  Also after a long discussion the rates were set for the upcoming year.  It was decided that the New Member rate will be Unlimited, removing the One Event Category.  It was also decided to bring back the Social Membership category.  During the discussion it was evident that prices needed to reflect the current financial position of the club.  So a slight adjustment was made.  The board carefully examined the rates of surrounding clubs.  The Comparison chart is posted on the Bulletin Board in the Club.  The new rates are listed above.

Chris Drummond reported that the potato pot had been repaired and some electrical work will be completed during the summer.  The parking lot grading is on everyone's mind now and Chris is exploring options.

Ron Fox reported that he had looked into Varaxis Ice Control System.  This is a control center that reads the ice temp., the air temp., the humidity, and controls the compressor, heaters, and de-humidifiers.  Allowing the club to turn down the plant during non-essential times, such as over night, weekends etc.  Ron reported that other clubs have seen savings in hydo bills of $1000 per month.  The unit is quite high in price, but could see it paying for itself in one year.  The board has asked for more information and will investigate further.

Karen Thompson spoke to the board as a representative of the Lions club.  She has reported that they understand our concern regarding dirt brought into the building by boots etc.. and is trying to address this.  A suggestion was forwarded that booties like in the hospital be available to cover the shoes.  She also reported that the club parking lot would be used for the annual Walk a Dog a thon on May 29.  And that the Lions will be hosting an Ewaste day May 21st. 10am to 3pm, with part of the proceeds to be donated to the club.  (see poster below)

JOKE of the WEEK

From the Curling Rules - The Measure

Measuring is used during a curling game to determine two things: is a stone in-play and which stone is closer to the T.  In both cases a measuring device or "stick" is used.  One is a 6' pole and the other is a variable gauge device.

A stone may not be measured in any way with anything during play of game, except to determine if one of the first 4 stones is "in the house".  You can not use your broom, foot, arm, coat, watch or anything to compare stones to see if yours is closer.  You can stand over the rocks and using your eyes make a guess as to which one is closer.

After the last rock in the end is thrown, than the Vice's and only the Vice's decide if and when a measurement can take place.

Yes there can be a tie with two rocks being exactly the same distance from the T.

If the tie was to determine the point in the end, than the end shall be considered a Blank.
