January 2016 OCC in the House

Volunteers needed for Committee's

One of the changes to take place at the Omemee Curling Club, has to be more involvement by the members of the Club.  It was made clear at the “Vote” meeting that you want to have the Club remain open and work to gain new members and strive to make the Club viable.  To that end the Board has started a couple of things.  One is to try and keep the members more informed as to what is going on.  Thus this newsletter, Facebook page and Twitter page. (see inside for details)  The other is to bring back Committees to inform and to share the load as it were.  These committees would meet informally and try and figure out new ways to do things, delegate small tasks to each other and to report back to the board.  So here are the Committees:

Membership; this group will come up with ideas to encourage new members, and to retain current members.

Promotion/Communication; to organize Newsletter, Press Releases, Website…. Etc.

Fundraising; to help raise needed funds to keep club viable.

Rentals; to maintain and work to rent out facility more effectively.

Custodial; this group would share the workload to keep club clean.

Kitchen/Bar; organizing supplies, etc

Volunteers; making sure each event has enough members to staff it.

We really need members to step up and sit on one or two of these committees.  Your input is valuable.  There will be signup sheets at the club or you can email omemeecurling@gmail.com and put committee in the subject area.

Rock engraving Fundraiser

Are you looking for a way to help the Omemee Curling Club, but don’t know how?  Well here is a great way to help and get a great gift  that will last for years.

For a $200 donation to the club, you can have your name engraved on a rock handle  for 5 years.  At the end of the five year term you can renew for half the price.

“This is a great way to support the club’s cash flow “  Laverne Muirhead said last night.  He is spearheading this campaign and has the order forms.

There are 16 spaces to put your name on and if that’s not enough you can add a second line for just $25 more.  “Some have suggested that you could put “In Memory of” on the top line, and the name of a love one on the second.” Laverne added.

All engraving will be done over the summer and will be on the handles ready for next seasons curling.

Rye Street Band at Dance

Put Saturday MAY 7th, 2016 in your calendar.  Rye Street will be performing in our club, to raise funds.  They are: Paula Corp - Lead vocalist, Steve Plunkett - Drums, vocals, Ken Deschamps - Bass, vocals, Rick Cleary - Guitar, vocals, Wade Gallant - Guitar, vocals.

Their Facebook page says they do Country/Rock/Blues music and “We're a 5 piece band that's looking to play some great tunes, meet some good people and have a good time. So far so good”

They play a lot of places around Peterborough and area, and have a large following of fans.

Leagues

The Current leagues continue to run well in the second half.  While some members have gone south, or are not able to curl,  other members have joined us for this session.  The Seniors, Tuesday, Wed and Thursday’s are going well.  The Friday night 7pm Pick Up games are seeing a bit of a growth.  It is starting at 7pm with an instruction period and then move into a 6 end game.

The Youth League, Sundays has not been as popular as it could be.  We have not seen the turnout yet.  We have made up more posters and recently social media has been activated.

On their Facebook page there are a number of songs you can listen to like; Big River, Why Haven’t I heard from you, Let it Rain and more…

As we get closer to the date we will post ticket info etc….

There has been some chat about people arriving a little earlier each night and opening the bar, so as to have a social time.  This is something you can bring up in your League night.

If you are a League convener, please send me news about the things that are going on.  The rest of the membership would like to know.  There are many members who only curl one or two nights a week and never see the other people and don’t know what is happening on those nights.

Board Notes

At the last Board meeting of the Omemee Curling Club we received with regret, the resignation letters of Earl, Laura, and Sandra.  We really want to thank each of these people for their support and input.  Three members of the Club stepped forward to help on the Board.  Wayne agreed to do the job of Secretary.  Rob Curtin and Terry Ouellete will sit as Directors.  Rob and his wife Jill are picking up the mail, and checking the phone messages.  Brian Thackeray is stocking and suppling the Bar.  Wayne has been vacuuming the club and trying to keep the change rooms clean.

We need you to do your part.  At the end of the night before you leave, look around is there stuff on the floor, chairs need to be straightened etc… This is OUR club.  Other members have stepped up to assist directly, Ron Fox has been making those posters and Rick Stockton has been instrumental in getting the Rye St. band to perform for us.  This is why we need people to sit on these committees.  (see front page)  We need you to advise us on how to do things.  Many minds can do anything.  No one person knows it all.  Please step up and show you care.

JOKE of the WEEK

After having played in a bonspiel, the fellow put his curling gear in his car then returned to the club lounge for the post-games socializing. After a couple of hours, he left the club to make his way home. A few minutes later, in a very agitated state, he rushed back in. He went immediately to the public phone and dialed the police. The other curlers within earshot heard the following:

" Yes, I want to report the theft of my curling broom! What kind of broom? Well, it's a blue rink-rat with my initials on it. When did it go missing? Well, sometime within the last two hours. Anything else about it? Well, it was in my car and that's missing too!!"

From the Curling Rules - Burnt Rocks

Rule 9 – Touched Delivered Stone in Motion, refers to a burnt rock.  There are three options for a burnt rock and we will list them as a, b, and c.   The first, a, is when a rock is burnt the non-offending team can decide to return the rocks to the way they were and take the burnt rock out of play.  The second, b, is letting the rocks stand as they were at the completion of the shot.  The third, c, is moving the rocks to a position that the non-offending team think would have happened had the rock not been burned.  This rule, C, can only be enacted if/when the rock is burnt inside the far hog-line.

What we have to understand in our game in regards to burnt rocks is that it is simply not allowed in our game under the current rules of play and as the non-offending team you are within your rights under our current set of rules to return things to the way they were and remove the offending rock.   We also have to ensure that if a rock is burnt the offending team doesn’t just decide to stop the rock without giving a quick and immediate heads up to the non-offending team who may decided to let it keep going.
