February 2016 OCC in the House

The club has been a busy place as of late.  On January 27th the Senior Men’s interclub bonspiel was held, February 6, saw the Mason Bonspiel fill the place all day long, February 8th the club hosted the Cattlemen’s annual bonspiel, which was a great success.  Then on February 12 the club was full of high school students attending the Lil Burns Memorial Bonspiel where 16 teams from as far away as Toronto came for a day of fun.  The Lions Club had their bonspiel on Feb 13, and had a great time.  Feb 16 and 17th, Omemee hosted the High School Kawartha Championships.  10 Boys Teams and 8 Girls teams from Haliburton, Cobourg, Peterborough, and Brock. Here is a link to the CHEX coverage.   Two winners from each division go on to COSSA and the winner of that goes to OFFSA the Provincial final.  Congratulations to Mark Jensen a club member and his wife Loraine for making this event so successful.

So as you can see it has been a very busy time and the club, and will continue through until the end of March.

The Last Chance Bonspiel is March 26th and still needs a few more teams.  See the sign up sheet on the Bulletin board. It is a lot of fun.  Also check out the sign up sheet for MIXED Doubles.  Laura and Ben are going to try this Monday nights with a view to starting a new League next fall.

Wayne Stovell would like to thank all the members for your help in keeping our club clean and neat.

And finally, Laverne reminds everyone to check your grippers.  It might be time for a new one.

Membership Deal

As of right now any NEW curler who signs up and pays for next season’s curling, Before March 31, 2016 can come out and play Friday’s for the rest of this season for FREE.  As an ADDED BONUS, the first 50 New curlers to sign up will get a $20 savings. WOW.

This is a limited time offer, so don’t delay.    If you know someone who is thinking about joining next year, make sure you tell them about this offer.  See Dianne Armstrong for more details.  Membership forms can be found by the bulletin board at the club, or ask current members.

Current members can also save money by purchasing next years membership before March 31, 2016 as well.  Due to ever increasing Hydro, Gas, taxes etc…. It probably will mean a slight increase in fees for next year.  So by purchasing now, you will save money and assist the club.

Gary Seymour does it again

The Omemee Curling Club wants to congratulate Gary Seymour, (Skip) Al Ness, (Vice)    Roger Armstrong, (Second, and Earl Quackenbush, (Lead) for their 8 ender, Feb 2, 2016 in Lindsay.  The team was competing in the Jack DeBois senior men's invitational bonspiel .  The Opposing skip was Dan Lemon from Lakefield.

This was not the first for Gary, his first was December 19, 2006, while playing with Wayne Manley, Keith Kidd and Robert Bark.  You can see this on a picture hanging on the back wall of the club room.

Board Notes

The latest board meeting took place Feb 15, 2016.  The treasurer’s report was presented, showing that we are making some progress on our debts, but still have a long way to go.  Rentals are brisk this time of year and it is encouraging to see all the members stepping up to help staff them.  We received a nice thank you card from the Lions Club regarding our help with their bonspiel.    The membership report was read and a motion was made to offer New and current members the opportunity to purchase next years registration before March 31, 2016 at this years rate.

On their Facebook page there are a number of songs you can listen to like; Big River, Why Haven’t I heard from you, Let it Rain and more…

As we get closer to the date we will post ticket info etc….

The Willard Rehill Volunteer Award is given out each year at our annual Banquet.  This is an award given to a deserving club member who has gone above and beyond in the past year to assist the club and its members.  The great thing is that you can nominate any member, by filling out the ballot and putting it in the box by the bar.

The annual Omemee Curling Club AGM will be April 13, 2016.

The Club Banquet and dance will be April 23, 2016.

As well two members of the club have stepped up to offer $20 subsidy for the first 50 new members.  Laverne reported that he had sold 37 rock engravings and encourages prompt payment please.  Ron Fox was appointed temporary Board member to fill the vacancy left by Brian Stockdale.  The Annual General meeting date is April 13, 2016.  The Banquet will be April 23rd and after much discussion the board felt, because of our financial situation, the price will be $20 for Members and Non members this year, to cover the cost of meal and entertainment.  The next board meeting will be March 21, 2016 at 7pm.

JOKE of the WEEK

You know your having a bad game when:

10. They start pebbling the ice in the fourth end.
9. Your skip keeps saying, "Nice try "
8. Your opposition starts hanging its score on the next sheet.
7. While you're in the washroom, your team-mates sneak away to the bar.
6. The Ice-maker starts heckling you.
5. It's only the third end and already you owe your team-mates six drinks.
4. Your opposition is lying four and your skip wants you to throw your rock through the house.
3. You throw out your knee in the first end and your team-mates don't even notice.
2. Your sweepers burst into laughter when you release your rock.
1. You score an eight-ender in the second end and you have to throw your last rock to win 9-8.
